Virtual Insanity

I spend most of my waking hours with a computer or cellphone closer than an arms length away. Actually my cellphone is at my bedside ready to download e-mails first thing in the morning.

Without a doubt I am a technology addict! What’s even more interesting is my knowledge is so limited. I cannot keep up to date with all the latest developments. Of course I know about iPhones, Adsense, Viral Marketing, SEO, WordPress themes, and who knows what else.

Then I come across another blog and I read about people making $500 a month from Adsense, without doing anything. It makes me wonder what I’m missing. Where does all this information come from?

Where do people find the time to write content for their blogs, read other blogs and comment? Where do they find the time to keep up to date with updates and new technology? And then still have enough energy for a social life.

Come Friday evening I am usually totally finished. My brain totally goes into information overload drive and all I can do is veg out on couch.

Of course this has been the first month since I have monetised my website and 7 months since I first learnt to develop my own website. Plus I earn my living in un-IT related field! I haven’t done badly at all.

I keep having to remind myself…baby steps.

  1. They have inquiring minds – reading everything they can about the practices and opportunities on the internet. There are many free resources offering advice.
  2. Passionate! Successful web entrepreneurs write original content for their website and blog, or they outsource it! They make their content about things they are passionate and knowledgeable about.
  3. Sees the gap! Think about it – everything you see on the internet has to be put there by someone, somewhere. Why not you?
  4. Is enthusiastic.
  5. Has faith in their abilities. If you build it, they will come!
  6. Is fearless! Approaches the world wide web as a new frontier to be conquered.
  7. Trustworthy and loyal. They work hard at their reputations by being honest and upfront about their intentions.

Wild, Wild West

Imagine the wild, wild west as it must have been hundreds of years ago. Sea farers from Europe arriving and finding an entire new frontier to conquer. What must life had been like in Italy, Spain, Holland, etc. that made people like Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus want to make that treacherous journey to find a sea route to the East.

Imagine a few hundred years later and the gold rush! People once again left their homes in search of untold fortunes.

We humans are forever looking to conquer something bigger and better. It is never painless. Someone pretty much always gets hurt in the process.

Fast forward another few years and some people start connecting computers together and hey presto! the beginnings of the internet is born.

Of course by now we know that while many of the current internet gurus were still a twinkle in the parents’ eyes, somewhere in the world one or two people were skipping college classes and working on developing computers for our future homes.

At last true world domination!

Then the dotcom boom…followed by a crash!

New discoveries! Again!

A search engine became a verb and colonized the www.

For all the googling, face booking, wikipediaing, seoing and you tubing that’s going on, somewhere in the basement of his/her mother’s house, someone is sitting and plotting the next best thing to conquer the new wild, wild west.

Some of us will move along with it and others will rage against it, but onward and upward we will go – whether someone gets hurt or not.

Love is in the Air

I cannot remember a life without Google…one of the longest, most satisfying relationships in my life.

A friend who knows everything, about anything.

My last visit to the dentist was delayed by a Googled temporary relief for toothache.

Vanilla extract worked for me, but apparently a clove or lime works just as well. The dentist removing the rogue tooth proved to be the last resort, but until my appointment I guzzled enough vanilla extract to bake a hundred cakes.

My know-everything-friend Google also misdiagnosed some ailments, but only because sometimes a live doctor needs to work too. Google did however provide enough information for questions to annoy the live doctor.

All this Google love is brought on by a possible catastrophe that was averted in my home this morning. I am only at work in front of my computer this morning because of my friend, Google.

As you might have picked up, I am domestically challenged. I live well within that skin, because I direct my energies elsewhere.

Well, this morning I needed some help with a blocked drain in the shower. I also needed to get ready for work!

After staring at the blockage for what seemed like forever, my craft brain took over. I took out a knitting needle and stuck it down the drain. My hair takes an hour to dry…did I mention that?

The water level did not move a centimeter. I kept calm, tried not to think about going to work with wild hair and got my cellphone.

Google came up trumps! Within minutes boiling water and vinegar saved the day!

My colleague told me this morning that I look like someone who fell in love over the weekend.

Oh yes, with Google. But that would be too weird to say…right?

Internet

This is tenth year I have had internet at home and things have changed a lot since then.

(I just e-mailed the one and only net buddy I have from way back then, to remind him of our ten year anniversary!)

For the first two years I had some of the craziest times on MS Chat and eventually migrated to ICQ. Before, when I imagined what the internet was about, this was it. Meeting friends from all corners of the globe and talking about everything under the sun.

After getting bored with chat, I moved on to internet dating for a while. My stories are not nearly as interesting as most, but it kept my sister, sisters-in-law and my close friends entertained.

I’m a total information junky, so for the next few years I only found articles to read about a variety of topics and also read message boards, without getting involved in many. I did for a short time have heated discussions on the Bold and the Beautiful message board, except for one tiny detail. I have not watched that soap in more than 10 years.

The beginning of last year led me to e-commerce, and especially the auction site. All this culminated nicely with a web design course, my website and an introduction to blogging earlier this year.

I think the biggest change over the past few years is that the internet has become a lot more connected. Now that I have my own website, I can truely see Web 2.0 at work.
