Trevor Manuel for Deputy President?

Written on November 30, 2008 – 7:07 am | by glasspearl |

Tim du Plessis the editor at Rapport newspaper discussed the scenario of Trevor Manuel as deputy president of the republic, on John Maytham’s Cape Talk radio show today.

The very idea seems so obviously brilliant now that it has been spoken, even though the thought had never crossed my mind.

Jacob Zuma’s presidency (which I hope will remain Kgalema Montlanthe’s presidency) could become a lot more palatable with Trevor as second in charge.

The discussion came about because of an article (Afrikaans) Du Plessis wrote in Rapport on 29/11/2008 of Maria Ramos’ new job as head of South Africa’s largest banking group ABSA being in conflict with her romantic partner’s position as Minister of Finance.

The editor of Rapport felt that the Finance Minister’s term – loyalty to the country notwithstanding – has to come to and end after 10 years to give a fresh perspective to the position.

Instead of upsetting the markets (again), having Manuel as Deputy President would instead create a possible Obama moment, according Tim du Plessis.

Now that’s change I can definitely believe in!

Trevor Manuel should be President, but I’m afraid he’s hit the ANC’s glass ceiling – only blacks are palatable to them as President or vice-President.

    Hi yzerfontein,

Realistically Trevor is unlikely to be president, I would settle for Deputy though.

The thought of a Manuel deputy presidency just sounded very exciting to me. Maybe it might just catch on if people start floating the idea around!
