Birthday of Charles Darwin
Today marks the birthday of Charles Darwin, a naturalist, also often referred to as the father of the theory of evolution.
As one who believes in both evolution and creationism up to a point, I celebrate the birth and work of a great man.
Charles Darwin born was on 12 February 1809, exactly 200 years ago in Shrewsbury, England and 50 years later published his groundbreaking book On the Origin of the Species, which laid the foundation for modern biology.
According to Wikipedia, Darwin realised and demonstrated that all species are connected have evolved over time through common ancestors and through the process of natural selection.
He came to the conclusion that all species on the planet, looked for the best possible inheritable traits to reproduce with, thereby strengthening the species chances of survival.
Other than being a pioneer in the field of biology, he was also a compassionate man who was against the use of slaves. After seeing slaves ill-treated, he wrote:
“…It makes one’s blood boil, yet heart tremble, to think that we Englishmen and our American descendants, with their boastful cry of liberty, have been and are so guilty.” ”
