Does Oprah Regret Opening Her School Yet?
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009One cannot help but wonder if Oprah Winfrey regrets opening her Leadership Academy in South Africa.
That school has been nothing but trouble since even before it opened.
As if her plate wasn’t already full with her media empire, weight loss struggles and trying to find time for herself, the school intermitently comes up with a scandal to test her resolve.
Even before building the school, Oprah spoke of her love for what she called her spiritual home – South Africa. She even had someone make a malva pudding on her show once! I guess that proves it, if building a school doesn’t!
Oprah had high hopes of giving extremely disadvantaged girls with potential the best education money could buy. Remember the tears when the school opened? Who knew it would turn into tears of frustration.
You would think not previously having a bed to sleep in would be motivation for the girls lucky enough to be chosen to live at the boarding school, to study hard and keep out of trouble.
Unfortunately it didn’t turn out that way.
First the principal was fired for alleged sexual misconduct and later she threatened to sue Ms Winfrey. Then there is the ongoing court case with the self same ex-principal.
Now a few of the girls have been asked not to return after the school holidays – for mean girls activities as well as sexual misconduct.
Why would they throw away a once in a lifetime opportunity?
Earlier this year Bill Gates mentioned a study that concluded: “If you want your child to get the best education possible, it is actually more important to get him assigned to a great teacher than to a great school.”
Perhaps Oprah’s dream school proves the point?
I do hope at least a few of those girls take advantage of the opportunity handed to them…for their own sakes.
Let Madonna Adopt the Child!
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009What is wrong with people?
Madonna is trying to give a home to an orphan child and the world is going crazy!
That really makes no sense whatsover.
From what we can see, Madonna seems to be a decent mother. Her children seem well adjusted and happy when we see glimpses of them photographed in public.
They seem well protected from the media, since she doesn’t parade them around nor does she put them on stage.
So what is the problem with the world’s media and social welfare groups criticising her?
Must a little girl be housed in an orphanage until she reaches the age of 18 to make a point?
Yes, some in Africa do not look after their children the way they should. Some do not look after themselves the way they should and they die leaving their children motherless.
We have a lot to be ashamed about the way many Africans treat their offspring.
Madonna has nothing to be ashamed about for trying to give a home to two Malawian children. In fact she should be left alone to adopt the child, through the courts. The way she is doing the adoption the legal way.
Not only is she giving a better future to two children, she is building a school in Malawi for girls as well as supporting orphanages.
I guess it’s easy for the media to criticise and then move on, forgetting there’s a family with children involved.
Fruit & Veg is Hypnotic!
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009I know I’m not the only person who walks into Fruit & Veg with the intention of getting apples and bananas and get to the till with a basket packed with stuff you never even knew existed.
My friends and colleagues have told similar stories of the Fruit & Veg effect.
So it was with me again this morning.
I’m currently on leave and trying to eat healthy to stay in shape for the Two Oceans 21km next week.
Off I went to my local Fruit & Veg store, just over the road from my home.
Last time I took plastic carrier bags, but when I got to the counter felt very environmentally unfriendly, so took my canvas bag with, this time.
Actually, just walking into Fruit & Veg makes me feel healthier and more green. Makes me want to switch off more lights at home.
My intention was to take a list and only buy what was on that list.
I forgot the list.
Apples and bananas turned into spinach, mixed nuts and of all things, Chinese giant peanuts.
Avocados were 3 for R10 so I had to get my favourite fruit.
Pineapples were 3 for the price of two, but I walked past that one. Cucumbers were also 3 for R10 I think, but I walked past that one too.
When I got to the counter I had again spent much more than I had planned, and I don’t know how it happened!
Had I not walked straight to the till, I might still be there buying who knows what.
That Fruit & Veg store sure knows how to draw us in and keep us there.
Perhaps it’s the natural food that makes us feel good? Whatever it is, I’m not going without my list again.
I forgot half the things I needed, again.
Supersport Fires Joost van der Westhuizen
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009The penny is really starting to drop for Joost van der Westhuizen.
Cape Talk Eyewitness news is reporting that Joost will no longer be working for Supersport!
Last night Supersport met with Joost to discuss the ongoing allegations of drug use and oral sex with a woman called Marilize van Emmenis captured on video.
After the meeting Supersport management put out a press release saying that they would no longer be using Joost for rugby commentary on their channel.
Joost was not a permanent employee of Supersport.
They said that although they believe Joost to be innocent unless proven guilty, the allegations were damaging to him as well as the image of the channel.
A load of nonsense if ever there was one!
No one knows or cares what those commentators get up to when they leave the studio.
