Earth Hour – Gimmick or not?

Tonight between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, we have been asked by Earth Hour (an international movement) to turn off our lights.

The purpose is to bring awareness of the impact our actions is having on the planet.

While the cause is worthwhile, it makes one wonder whether it will impact those who are not already doing their environmental bit.

When I asked a friend whether she will be turning off her lights tonight, she replied that she already turns off all the lights while watching tv at night.

I usually have one light on, only in the room being used.  And I do my bit to save energy by turning off the geaser when I’m not home or sleeping.  I burn low voltage energy saving lamps and haven’t taken a bath in years! (I shower!)

I also eat as much organic local fresh food as possible, walk from work many days and take public transport whenever I can.

As far as I’m concerned, I am always aware of my impact on the planet, one hour tonight is not going to make any difference to the way I live my life.

If it makes someone else more aware, then more power to them, but don’t expect me to sign up on websites like Earth Hour’s local one. I absolutely hate fads and gimmicks.

Eskom has probably done more to make us aware of energy than any environmental documentary or preaching has ever done.

It woke me up for sure.
