With Trevor Manuel Gone: The Sky Hasn’t Fallen
For ten years we were made to believe that if Trevor Manuel was no longer Minister of Finance, the world as we know it would come to an end.
While the economy’s relative strength is in large part due to Trevor Manuel’s excellent handling of our country’s finances, it really was time for him to be moved to another position.
Trevor was the longest serving Finance Minister in the world. And that’s not always a good thing.
Before now, there was absolutely no reason for him not to be in the job, but no one should be indispensible.
And apparently no one is.
Because so far when I look outside my window, I still see blue sky above Table Mountain – albeit with a few gathering clouds.
Trevor Manuel deserves every accolade he receives for the job he did as Finance Minister. He made us feel safe by always looking in control.
He gave us bad news, with good news to make it easier to swallow.
There comes when change is necessary and it took a bold move from President Jacob Zuma to move his cabinet around.
Who knows if Manuel’s successor Pravin Gordhan will be as successful – because he has big shoes to fill.
Hopefully Trevor Manuel’s talents will be put to even better use in his new position.
