SABC Bails on Special Assignment – Again

Written on May 26, 2009 – 9:55 pm | by Abigail Abrahams |

Whoever is in charge with programming at SABC is doing them no favours at all.

First they scheduled, then pulled the Special Assignment episode dealing with political satire just before the elections.

Then Tuesday did exactly the same thing once again.

They scrolled a message across tv screens from about 6.30pm saying :”owing to the fact that due process with regards to consultation has not been concluded”…whatever that means.

Whoever decided to pull the programme is plain stupid!

They are bringing much more attention to the subject, by banning it than they would by showing it.

Who actually watches Special Assignment anyway?

The first time the episode was pulled, it was said it was allegedly defamatory.

Satire is like that sometimes.  Someone should tell Jacob Zuma and the SABC.

Politicians are not mini gods, their names are not sacred - even though a few of them might think they are.

Perhaps it’s time for one of those libel court cases against the likes of Zapiro go to court so that we can get a ruling on what is legal and what isn’t when public figures are ridiculed by comedians and satirists.

Neither the SABC, government officials nor Jacob Zuma himself comes off looking good here.

They are doing serious damage to our democracy when they mess with our freedom of speech.

If by pulling Special Assignment the powers that be intended to enhance Zuma’s reputation, they’ve just gone and done the opposite.

Now my darling u see why I shall never waste my valueable time voting for a political party that has a split brain-a-nality. They promote freedom of speech but only if and when its suits them. To me that is freedom of speechlessness. They musnt get ME started van ek sal vir hulle wys wat regte SPEECHFULNESS is!

Here’s the thing CB, just because we support a particular party doesn’t mean we must agree with everything they say or do.

I agree with a lot of the ANC’s policies and am no JZ fan, but will speak out against anyone and anything I disagree with.

I am my own person 100%!
