At the end of their play “Under the Fig Tree” at the Baxter Theatre on May 30, Jody Abrahams asked Diaan Lawrenson (Paula of 7de Laan) to marry him.
The play the two starred in, depicts the love story between an inter-racial couple, mirroring the relationship between the actors.
Diaan and Jody’s relationship though started before his first marriage had ended, resulting in the two becoming fodder for tabloids.
Jody eventually divorced his ex-wife in January last year according to an interview with Diaan in Sarie.
Although the couple’s families are accepting of their relationship, not everyone in the public felt the same way.
Much of the couple’s troubles could have been caused by the fact that Diaan plays a well-loved character Paula van der Lecq while Jody played Donovan, an abusive boyfriend (of another character) in 7de Laan.
The tabloids also accussed Diaan and Steve Hofmeyr of having an affair when the two played romantic interests in the soapie – which Diaan strongly denied.
Diaan and Jody recently opened a restaurant called the Dagbreek Restaurant and Museum together with other partners in Riviersonderend.
Paula (and Diaan Lawrenson of course) are expected back on the 7de Laan set in August. Expect Paula to be back on screen around two months later.
