We Won the Lions Rugby Test Series – For Goodness Sake!
By the tone of the media, one could be forgiven for thinking that the Springboks had actually lost to the British and Irish Lions.
Instead it’s the reverse. The Springboks lost the final match, but the won the previous two matches in the three match series.
In the sporting world it’s a good thing to win a series. It’s better than winning one match out of three.
Someone should tell that to Gavin Rich and his fellow rugby writers who have absolutely nothing good to say about the Springboks.
The Lions team are treated like the Queen of England herself even in defeat – by the South African fickle media.
Sportswriters – especially rugby ones – are the meanest lot out there. The never support our players.
They agree with the British press about Peter de Villiers. The same UK press that will tear our players apart from the minute they step off the airplane at Heathrow.
I don’t understand this mentality.
So the Springboks wore white arm bands around their sleeves on Saturday. Who cares. Most people wouldn’t even have cared if it wasn’t brought up at a news conference.
And then blown out of all proportion.
Leave our Springboks alone to celebrate their great victory. In 5 years time the history books will show that South Africa won the series. Few people will care about the details.
There will be enough losses to get excited over in time to come. And no doubt Gavin Rich and co will get excited.
