The Watercooler Buzz – Is Semenya Male or Female
I was barely in the door this morning when our receptionist asked whether I believed Caster Semenya to be male or female.
Throughout the day the topic of conversation made it around the office, complete with this morning’s front page of the Cape Times.
Admittedly there were giggles and a few bewildered looks. Many people had actually no idea what the fuss was about or who Semenya was.
The consensus was that, yes, she looks very masculine, yet no one would have blinked an eye if the controversy had not surfaced as some men looked feminine and some women masculine.
One colleague actually compared Semenya to the tennis playing Williams sisters! Although I wouldn’t go that far.
None of us had however heard of Caster Semenya before yesterday when the controversy originated in Australia.
All felt bad for a young, 18 year old, who had to go through such public scrutiny as something so personal as her sexuality/gender.
