As I’m writing this I’m so conflicted.
In all consciousness I cannot eat the meat of animals anymore.
Not the mass produced kinds that are injected with hormones and inhumanely housed, anyway.
Yesterday on our way to Mitchell’s Plain, we saw hundreds of live chicken in tiny cages being sold on the road.
Just as when my colleague told me about her chickens months ago, I had and emotional reaction.
How is that different from battery chickens, I wondered.
I don’t normally eat much red meat and can go months without any meat.
However, the lifestyle change will be huge, especially the social aspect.
Other than one or two vegetarians at work, everyone I know eats meat.
And catering at work is usually a nightmare when we need to get extra food for the few vegetarians.
Not to even mention my family and friends. Their meals revolve around meat most of the time.
Plus I hate to be labeled anything. I certainly won’t go around claiming to be vegetarian.
And where do I draw the line?
Not eating animal meat is one thing. There’s also the matter of consuming eggs, which is HUGE for me.
Eggs are in pretty much every bit of baked goods and in other food.
What I would most miss is to just walk in the supermarket and buy groceries or fast food without thinking.
So after considering everything carefully, I will start the New Year meat free and see how it goes.
Someone once said: “if you know better, you do better.”
I don’t think there’s any turning around for me as much as I’m trying to debate the decision.

The Christmas holidays have already started for me.
Our offices are closed until 11 January 2010 (yayyyy).
I went into the Claremont CBD yesterday to deposit my Google cheque, but wow the shops and malls were empty!
Makes me think that retailers are in for a bleak Christmas, which could work out well for you and me come the January sales.
That’s if we can keep our cash until then!
For Christmas in my family we do a name draw and buy one gift for one adult and get something small for the little ones.
I drew my mom’s name. I saw a freshwater pearl necklace on Bidorbuy that she will like. It costs less than R100. That’s a lot less than I’ve seen in magazines.
I will also check today’s Crazy Auction for bargains.
My 5 nieces who range in ages from 1-16 years might just get money to put into a post office account.
This aftermath of the recession is a great time to learn money lessons – for adults and children.

The first season of Ugly Betty is coming to the broader SA tv viewing public on 18 January at 7.30pm.
Episodes will be broadcast three nights in a row – Mondays to Wednesdays.
The bad news is no Survivor until at least March?
Ugly Betty tells the story of Betty Suarez who despite her ugly duckling looks gets a glamour job at Mode Magazine.
She initially gets the job because boss Daniel Meade is known to hire pretty assistants and then sleeps with.
Super bitch Wilhemina Slater’s main aim is to take over the magazine empire and becomes Daniel and Betty’s nemesis.
I can’t wait to watch these episodes again.

One of my least favourite things to do is to go shopping for bras.
Unfortunately it’s one of those things that has to be done.
So Saturday I was in the mall and in the spur of the moment decided to do my annual bra shopping.
I went into Edgars, asked the sales assistant in the underwear department to help me.
Reluctantly she took out her tape measure, and declared me to be a 32C.
I wish!
My face must have registered disbelief, because she quickly advised me to try different sizes.
I knew it wasn’t going to be the day I was taking a new bra home.
I fitted on a few in the change room, but nothing fit properly and the assistant had disappeared!
So I went to get some workout clothing instead.
During the next few days I will go to Woolworths where I’ve found the assistance with bra fittings to be friendlier and more sympathetic.
I just have to find the courage again.

Last night Paula van der Lecq returned to the Laan in the form of Miss Hugo.
Unfortunately I fell asleep before 7de Laan even came on. My intention was to just rest for a few minutes, but next thing I knew it was 7.00pm!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…
However, Kelly from 7de Laan fansite came to the rescue with this update:
“well Paula was super late and as Altus was about to announce Miss Hugo was delayed Sanet told him she was there. Altie recognized her but could not do anything. He was very flustered and went outside for air leaving Marko to take over. Aggie and crew were all saying look it’s Paula.
Altie came back from his air and said to Aggie he’s going to confront Paula. When he went up to her Paula was taken back by him and quickly escort away. Shame Altie was very upset. He is not sure if it’s her.”
I hope to catch Paula tonight on the Laan and again on Sunday if I’m home.
