What’s Going on with the 2009 Matric Physics Results?
I’ve been listening to Capetalk this afternoon and there appears to be a problem with the Matric Physics results.
Physical Science learners who usually got A’s throughout their school careers, ended up with one and even two symbols lower than expected.
A few went to their provincial education departments to apply for a remark.
Teachers and tutors are equally perplexed as unlike the Mathematics exam, the Physics wasn’t unusually difficult.
A few Capetalk listeners suggested there might have been a mistake with the marking memo.
Amalusi though say they did not pick up a problem with the Physical Science results, but would have to have another look.
The Department of Education might have to remark all Physics papers, because there are huge implications for both the upper and lower ends of the learner spectrum.
If there is a re-mark, it could change the general pass rate.
More disturbing though. The Gauteng girl who committed suicide when her name was not in the newspaper reportedly failed Maths and Physical Science.

As a science teacher I am shattered that the marks of my top students was between 10% and 15% lower than they deserve. Can anyone out there help me to find the reason for that?

more concering is the total absence of response other than the conclusion that the matrics did not do as well this year. This includes the western cape mec Grant.
It is obvious that there was a marking or collating of marks error on a large scale.
Possibly computer error.
