My Mitchell’s Plain Aunty is Loving Facebook!

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

My sister phoned me Thursday to catch up on family gossip.

During the course of the conversation she asked: “…are you friends with Joe* on Facebook?”

“Who?” I asked.

“Stephanie’s* son.”

“Oh,” I replied. “No.”

She went on to explain that Joe, a second cousin had cut ties with the family.

“How do you know this?” I wanted to know.

“Aunty Maxine* told mum.” she said. “She said it was on Facebook.”

Apparently my aunty told my mother that Facebook keeps her in touch with the ‘children’.

I further questioned how my 70+ year old aunty who doesn’t own (nor does she want to own) a computer and who thinks the internet is evil, get access to Facebook.

My sister didn’t know, so while we chatted she logged on to Facebook to investigate.

None of my aunty’s children or grandchildren are friends with Joe, she discovered.

We were baffled.

“Request Joe to add you as a friend,” she told me.

“If I don’t know him, how will he know me,” I reasoned.

So my sister became friends with my second cousin and got the whole story on his wall!

“You better watch what you write on your wall.” I told my sister.

“Aunty Maxi loves to skinder.”

*names have been changed ’cause who knows what will happen to me if my Mitchell’s Plain aunty gets word of this blog.

Recent Celebrity Romances

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Three of South Africa’s celebrities have announced their engagements recently as reported in 25 February 2010 issue of You magazine.

Chris Linford, Rex in Egoli got engaged in November to his girlfriend of 5 years Candice Dafel.  Candice is a professional dancer.

They plan to have a black and white themed wedding at the Riverside Castle in Pretoria later in the year.

Janez Vermeiren of Top Travel and Top Billing travelled to Brazil to meet his model girlfriend Juliana Vasconcelos’ parents. Since Janez can only speak a few words in Portuguese and Juliana’s family could not speak English, the had another family member translate.

So Janez is not involved with JeannieD or was that just a publicity stunt for Top Travel?

Talk Radio 702 and Capetalk’s Redi Direko announced her engagement to doctor boyfriend Brian Thlabi.  They are already living together and have been a couple for 5 years.

The couple have not yet set a wedding date, but Redi explained that it would have to be after the Comrades Marathon (as both are long distance runners) and her mother lives in Scotland and she obviously wants her to be there too.

7de Laan: Ryno and Isabelle at Last

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

It’s taken a very long time, but now it looks like my second favourite 7de Laan couple (behind Paula and Altie), are back together again!

Ryno has decided that his mother’s betrayal of him when he was young had cost him too many relationships and it was time to stop letting it haunt him.

He actually acknowledged his many marriages – 4 that I can remember.

His first wife, Barbara, who he divorced before we viewers knew him, also Christelle Terblanche, Annette – the redhead who died, and Emma.

He was also seriously involved with that “American” actress Debbie Meyer as well as Sandra Stutterheim and of course Isabelle.

After dumping Isabelle for having an affair with Dawid Greeff, it looked like Ryno would never ever forgive her.

Even though she terribly regretted falling for that rat, Dawid.

That day has finally arrived. Isabelle and Ryno finally spoke without fighting, he invited her for Evelina’s chicken pie and then asked if they could try their relationship again.

Isabelle agreed! *PHEW*

Lets talk about sex

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Two different situations had me thinking about my approach to sex.

First, Friday night’s episode of Man on Sabc 3 left me feeling a bit disappointed about the men.

Pretty much like Henri’s date felt after their date at Charlie’s Bakery…

For those who don’t know, Henri is gay and dated a guy who wanted to get to know him better before getting physical.

Such a change from the rest of the men and women on that show who seemed to be on the hunt for sex all the time.

Is the club scene really just a jungle of men and women prowling for sex?

Then today I walked into a conversation (in my office, though I did not comment) where three colleagues were discussing a quick HIV test one could do at home.

Mind you all three are in long term relationships.

I thought they were being unrealistic as no man I’ve ever dated asked my HIV status. None brought up contraception, and very few even carried condoms (I do).

Anyway, even if the situation arose, doing an HIV test just before hitting the sheets makes no sense to me.

What if the result is wrong? An HIV test would have to be done by a medical professional and the relationship would have to be monogomous after the test if I’m to feel safe.

I prefer having protected sex anyway as HIV isn’t the only STI and an unplanned pregnancy is not an option.

So while I’m not against casual sex, prowling for it seems so – - ugly. And making someone do an HIV test minutes before having sex is just crazy.

But that’s just my opinion.
