Friday was just one of those days at office that we sometimes have. Back to back meetings and no work.
Time is money, our housekeeper reminded us. To no avail,
After the meeting on my way to my desk, a colleague pulled me into her office.
I know office politics can get hectic sometimes, so I wondered what was up.
“Abby” she whispered, “you must go see Gabriella the psychic on Facebook.”
My first thought was surprise that she (my colleague) was on Facebook at all.
Turns out another colleague alerted her to Gabriella’s existence on Facebook.
The second colleague was non too happy about her sharing such sensitive information with me.
“Don’t worry,” colleague number 1 assured her, “Abby is into horoscopes.”
I just rolled my eyes, with a “who me?” look.
Back at my desk I logged onto Facebook to find psychic Gabriella. Being a bit internet savvy I located her website via the web so she wouldn’t have my personal details.
I gave her my Gmail address and first name and she kindly took time out of her busy day to do my charts.
Amazing things awaits me!
And all I need to do is give her my credit card details so she can charge me around R500 to find out more.
Hell no! I thought.
But psychic Gabriella doesn’t take no for an answer easily.
She has been emailing me ever since.
One would think as a psychic she’d be aware that she’s wasting her time!
Damn Psychics!

So I’ve struggled a bit to get into 2011. For no apparent reason.
Or maybe it’s that fear of success raising it’s ugly head again.
At the end of last year my performance appraisal was very positive. However, the ball was put in my court to make the first move.
I haven’t!
Although lots have happened automatically without much effort on my part.
I have been given the opportunity to get some things out of my system at work. Again, it just happened. The opportunity presented itself and I spoke up.
Now here’s the interesting part in all of this. I’m really struggling with my beliefs. As in what do I actually believe!
I know with a 100% certainty that religion isn’t for me. But something is at work.
How else is it possible that my dreams are coming true without effort on my part. Other than stating my intentions.
So far my daily meditation practice is going strong, but that has no religious basis. Not for me anyway.
As with daily exercise and healthy eating, it is more about discipline and routine.
Anyway, as for my love life…
This year I’m taking it as it comes. No drama from my side.
Of course my IT studies continue as usual and hopefully my blogs.
I have travel plans this year! For now the plan is to go to Melbourne Australia for the holidays in December 2011. I’m hoping to add another destination or two in the mix somewhere along the line
Since I expect this year to be one of much growth and change in my life, the tone of this blog will likely change on the personal topics side.
I’m not yet quite sure how yet.
Surely between 7de Laan, Malema, Zille and my Mitchell’s Plain aunty, some things will remain consistent though.
Hope to speak to you more often!
Btw this is my first blog post using the WordPress app on my Blackberry and I’m loving it!

Tuesday was cleaning lady day, so I went to the movies at Cavendish Square again.
This time the cinema had about six other patrons, me included. Looks like the best time of the day to see a film, something I will make a point of doing again.
Anyway, The Social Network itself is an excellent movie. I enjoyed it from the first riveting scene when Mark and his girlfriend turn a ‘normal’ conversation to a break up.
Which ultimately led to facebook.com.
The Social Network regales the story via two lawsuits against Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) by his former best friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) and another by Winklevos twins and their business partner.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevos and their business partner claimed the idea behind Facebook belongs to them.
The film is based on the book, The Accidental Billionaires and told from Saverin’s point of view.
Before the movie I was definitely team Zuckerberg. And I still am. But now have some sympathy for Saverin as well.
Neither come across as villians during the telling of the story, in my opinion. It is made quite clear that Zuckerberg was the primary driving force and main programmer behind the creation of the world’s most popular social networking site.
And that Saverin provided the initial investment.
Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) brought the sleaze factor in the movie, but also gave the necessary push that took the company to the next level.
The Winkelvoss twins were played a bit for comic relief.
Although the real Mark Zuckerberg did not ‘like’ the movie, the Winkelvoss twins and Parker came off looking a lot worse than anyone else. The twins as petty and Parker as smooth and sleazy.
All the performances in the movie were really good, especially Eisenberg.
Whatever the truth of the story, the movie itself war very compelling and entertaining.

Our City of Cape Town local government have been very busy trying to offend even more of it’s citizens.
Not so long ago, the courts had to order the city to once again erect community toilets in Khayelitsha which mayor Dan Plato had removed just before the Soccer World Cup last year.
(Some Khayelitsha residents wanted concrete structures, protested and removed the corrugated iron ones around the toilets.)
The toilets were then completely removed by the city, because the world media’s eyes would be on us, the mayor declared at a news conference. Wearing a Bafana Bafana jersey, mind you.
To follow that up, the city fathers (and mothers, I suppose) voted to have a new liquor by-law enacted.
No liquor to be sold or served after by establishments after 11pm in residential areas and 2.00am in business areas.
They made this joyous announcement the Tuesday before New Year’s eve. To be strictly enforced on New Year’s eve, the councillor in charge of these matters, declared.
Of course they had to backtrack because a UCT Masters student reminded the city that the by-law had not yet been gazetted. And could only do so on 14 January 2011.
Backed into a corner, the city have now put out a more toned down statement about “educating” business owners about the by-law and phasing it in over a few months.
Just so no one else feel left out…
The City of Cape Town have in their wisdom (naturally) decided that the annual Coon Carnival had to take place either on New Year’s day or the Saturday after.
Since the 2nd fell on a Sunday this year (a religious day even for slaves), the Coons wanted to march on 3 January.
For those uneducated
in these matters, the Coon Carnival was celebrated by Cape slaves on 2 January as a protest against their masters.
Not 1 January. Nor 8 January.
Apparently the city had arranged with a rebel group of Coons to march through the city centre on 1 January.
The ‘official’ group arranged a protest march through to the Premier’s Wale Street today.
Much like slaves did a century or so ago, one would imagine.
But the City of Cape Town probably won’t even get the irony.
