Idols winner winner Karin Kortje was apparently caught drunk driving in the early hours of Sunday morning according to a news bulletin on Cape Talk Eyewitness news.
Everyone makes mistakes, but it seems Karin’s mistakes are of the public variety and the luckless woman gets caught every so often.
Remember how in 2005 she started off at Idols as a poor apple-picker from Grabouw with a huge voice, a fiancée and a son? Karin was by far the most popular contestant in that season of Idols.
Then she won the new car, a new boyfriend and a new life in Johannesburg.
She eventually dumped her Grabouw fiancée who she had naturally outgrown – understandable when you compare a life as a Johannesburg-based celebrity to life in semi rural Grabouw . Her new boyfriend was younger and not a very savoury character.
On a trip to Cape Town Karin and her new boyfriend booked a room in a guest house where the boyfriend murdered the owner of the guest house.
During the trial, Karin met a married man, Shaundore Aspeling, who she started dating after his divorce.
It looked like Karin’s story was going to have a happy ending when she and Shaun got married in August 2009. And a musical of her past directed by Basil Appollis and featuring Karin and Loukman Adams, “This is my life”, opened for a second run in Cape Town at the end of last year.
Unfortunately things have not turned out as many had hoped, because it seems Karin missed to limelight and confessed to the tabloids in 2011 that her marriage was on the rocks. She confessed to Kuier magazine ”To be honest, our relationship was initially all about the sex.”
She also spoke of her abuse of alcohol and drugs during her years in Grabouw- dagga and mandrax. Also of physical abuse at the hands of her mother.
So it looks as if poor Karin’s days in the tabloids are far from over.
Here’s hoping that this talented singer, who many has rooted for, gets her act together and gets into the news for all the right reasons i.e. her music.
